Massachusetts

A feasibility meeting was held in Massachusetts on September 24, 2007.  Significant interest was expressed in holding a Summit, and a Summit Planning Group was formed.

The group got itself organized and made some preliminary decisions, but then two blows occurred in quick succession: the resignation of the chair, James Campbell, a consultant and former Commissioner of the Division of Industrial Accidents, due to pressing matters at work, followed by the sudden death of the co-chair, Dr. Bill Patterson, Regional Medical Director of Concentra Health Systems.

After a period of uncertainty, the planning committee regrouped, new co-leaders emerged, and planning resumed. However, the reconstituted committee decided in June that they would hold a conference focusing on chronic pain, believing that topic would appeal to the interests of people in Massachusetts, given local circumstances. This narrow and highly-targeted focus is not consistent with the 60 Summits Project's purposes and framework. As a result, if this group continues in their current direction, their conference will not be part of The 60 Summits Project.
